In our previous article, we discussed why action is important for leaders and how it can benefit your leadership role. Today, we will be sharing some leadership principles that can help you improve your skills and strategies in this area as a leader.

Action is not just about doing things, but doing the right things at the right time and in the right way. Therefore, as a leader, you need to plan, prioritise, and execute your actions effectively and efficiently. Here are some leadership principles and concepts that can help you do that:

Principles for Taking Decisive Action

  • The SMART framework. The SMART framework is a method of setting goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. The SMART framework can help you define your goals clearly and realistically and break them down into manageable and actionable steps. It can also help you track your progress and results and evaluate your performance and outcomes. As a leader, you need to use the SMART framework to set goals that align with your vision and that are challenging and motivating for you and your team.
  • The 80/20 rule. The 80/20 rule, also known as the Pareto principle, states that 80% of the results come from 20% of the efforts. The 80/20 rule can help you identify and focus on the most important and impactful actions that will lead to your desired results. It can also help you eliminate or delegate the less important and less impactful tasks that will consume your time and energy. As a leader, you need to use the 80/20 rule to prioritise your tasks and optimise your productivity and efficiency.
  • The Eisenhower matrix. The Eisenhower matrix, also known as the urgent-important matrix, is a tool that can help you categorise your actions based on their urgency and importance. The Eisenhower matrix can help you decide what to do, what to schedule, what to delegate, and what to eliminate. It can also help you balance your short-term and long-term goals and avoid procrastination and distraction. As a leader, you need to use the Eisenhower matrix to manage your tasks and optimise your effectiveness and performance.
  • The action learning cycle. The action learning cycle, also known as the experiential learning cycle, is a process of learning from your actions and applying your learning to improve your actions. The action learning cycle consists of four stages: plan, do, reflect, and apply. The action learning cycle can help you learn from your experiences and improve your skills and abilities. It can also help you adapt to changing situations and solve problems creatively. As a leader, you need to use the action learning cycle to develop yourself and your team and optimise your growth and improvement.

These are some of the leadership principles and concepts that can help you improve your action skills and strategies as a leader. Of course, there are many more, and we encourage you to explore and learn more about them. However, learning is not enough. You also need to practice and apply what you learn in your action situations and contexts.

To help you with that, we will be sharing some tools, resources, and recommendations that can help you take action more effectively and efficiently on Friday. Stay tuned for more!
