This week, as we dive into Week 3 of our April theme—Resilience: Thriving Through Change and Challenge—let’s set the tone for a purposeful, forward-looking journey.
Change is a constant companion in life, and for leaders, it’s both a challenge and an opportunity.
Here in Buea, Cameroon, we see it every day—whether it’s the shifting demands of a growing business, the unpredictability of the rainy season, or the evolving needs of our communities. As Socrates wisely said, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”
For African executives, resilience isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a way of life. From navigating economic fluctuations to leading teams through cultural transitions, we’ve learned to adapt while holding fast to what matters most—our values, our vision, and our people. This week, let’s shift our mindset from resisting change to embracing it as a catalyst for growth. Imagine a farmer in the lush fields of Fako Division: when the rains come unexpectedly, they don’t curse the sky—they adjust their planting, protect their crops, and find ways to thrive. That’s the spirit of resilience we’re cultivating this week.
So, how do we begin? Start by setting an intention for the week ahead. Ask yourself: What “new” can I build in my leadership this week? Maybe it’s a fresh approach to a stalled project, a renewed focus on team morale, or a bold step toward a long-delayed goal. In Cameroon, where community and collaboration are at the heart of our culture, resilience often means leaning into our collective strength. Think of the women in our markets who pivot their businesses daily to meet customer needs or the tech innovators in Bamenda creating solutions despite limited resources. Their example inspires us to lead with purpose, no matter the circumstances.
Globally, leaders face similar tests—technological disruptions, market shifts, or unexpected crises. The difference lies in how we respond. This week, let’s commit to building something new rather than clinging to what’s fading. Take 10 minutes today to reflect: What change in your organisation or personal life feels overwhelming? Write it down, then list one small action you can take to move forward. It could be a conversation with a team member, a tweak to your strategy, or even a moment of rest to recharge. Small steps, rooted in intention, pave the way for lasting impact.
As the week unfolds, we’ll explore practical tools and principles to help you thrive through change while staying true to your authentic self. For now, let’s start with a positive mindset. Picture yourself standing on Mount Cameroon’s slopes, the wind at your back, looking out over a horizon of possibilities. That’s the energy we’re bringing into this week—resilient, hopeful, and ready to build anew.
